Are Deutz-Fahr Tractors Any Good? (Explained for Beginners)

Deutz-Fahr tractors good

Deutz-Fahr is a joint venture between two separate German agricultural machinery manufacturers. The merger occurred in 1968 when Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz AG (KHD Group) acquired a majority stake in Fahr.

The two companies no longer produce tractors individually but as a Deutz-Fahr merger.

Deutz-Fahr tractors are well-known for their high state-of-the-art technology, good sophistication, ease of operation, and good fuel economy.

It’s hard to deny that Deutz-Fahr tractors are good, but are they worth your money? Read on to find out.

The Quality of Deutz-Fahr Tractors

Deutz-Fahr tractors are high-quality and durable tractors that come in a wide range of engine sizes to serve different farm applications. Also, they excel in functionality, durability, service, and versatility.

Also, the company has invested massively in ensuring that their tractors have a broad range of configuration choices to meet your daily tasks’ requirements.

Deutz-Fahr tractors’ quality closely matches Fendt, John Deere, Massey Fergusson, Case IH, and New Holland.

They’re a reliable brand trusted in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Who Manufactures Deutz-Fahr Tractors?

Deutz-Fahr tractors are currently manufactured and supplied by an Italian tractor manufacturing giant, SDF Group.

The company is located in Treviglio, Italy, and has production plants in Europe and Asia to cater to different tractor horsepower classes. SDF is an acronym for SAME, Deutz, and Fahr tractors.

Deutz was formed in 1894 and merged with Fahr in 1968 to form the Deutz-Fahr.

In 1995, Deutz-Fahr merged with Italian group SAME/Lamborghini/Hurlimann to become the SAME-Deutz-Fahr (SDF) Group.

Are Deutz and SAME Tractors Same?

Deutz and SAME are tractor companies under the SDF Group, but they’re very distinct brands.

SAME tractors are red with grey engines, while Deutz-Fahr tractors are generally green. It would help if you didn’t use color schemes to differentiate them since they both allow for customized paints.

Note that some models of Deutz-Fahr and SAME tractors use the same engine. The Deutz-Fahr 4E, 5-series uses the Deutz Farmotion engine used by similar SAME tractors.

Pros and Cons of Deutz-Fahr Tractors

Having driven one, I can confidently recommend a Deutz-Fahr tractor to anyone needing a reliable, compact, and powerful tractor. However, you’ll have to dig deeper than you would for some utility tractors such as Mahindra.

In this section, we’ll go over Deutz-Fahr’s pros and cons.

Pros

  • Deutz-Fahr tractors use specially-designed Deutz engines famed for their excellent fuel efficiency.

The Profi-PowerMix test on the Deutz-Fahr 6 series ascertained that the brand was the best in diesel economy in its power class.

Deutz-Fahr is the leading company in Selective Catalytic Reduction in the tractor segment in the world.

  • Deutz-Fahr tractors are very durable and have low running and maintenance costs.

Their low running costs can be attributed to their excellent fuel economy, and that system functioning is not interdependent.

An example is that the lubrication of the fuel pumps is independent of the fuel quality.

  • Deutz-Fahr tractors pioneer the Comfort Shift Transmission technology.

If there’s one area that automobile and tractor manufacturers have been working on tirelessly, it’s the transmission system.

And amongst tractors, Deutz-Fahr’s 6-Series Class pioneers the C-Shift Transmission. It is a system that enables you to gears electronically.

It doesn’t require clutching, and one can shift between the gears by flicking a PowerComS joystick.

Cons

  • Deutz-Fahr tractors are very expensive and might not be the best option for small-scale farmers.

Deutz-Fahr launched an Indian branch to make small horsepower tractors for small-scale farmers and utility tasks to counter the price hurdles.

  • They lack a good dealership network in any other place apart from Europe.

If you’re to purchase the tractor and it develops a fault, you might have to order and wait several weeks or even months before the spare part is delivered.

How Long do Deutz-Fahr Tractors Last?

Deutz tractors last a lifetime. However, like most present-day tractors, their durability depends on the frequency of servicing, maintenance, and level of use and abuse.

With over a century of dedicated research and development, Deutz-Fahr is one of the leading manufacturers of reliable and durable brands in Europe.

Older versions of the tractors were abuse tolerant given that they lacked sophistication and were, basically, an engine block, a drive mechanism, and chassis. Modern versions have automation and better electronic systems that need care and frequent updates.

Remember to use your tractor for the right tasks according to its engine capacity and grip. Failing to obey this rule wears down your tractor engine, braking system, suspensions, and electronics quickly, resulting in losses.

What’s the Warranty on Deutz-Fahr Tractors?

The company offers two tiers of warranty cover. One covers 3000 working hours and 3 years, and the other is a 5000 working hours and 5 years warranty. Only one choice between the working hours or years is applicable as it is a whatever-comes-first warranty cover.

Deutz-Fahr’s SDF ExtraCare is one of the most owner-friendly warranties in the tractor industry. It offers tractor owners an option to purchase more warranty protection than other owners.

The inclusive ExtraCare features include:

  • Customized warranty terms
  • Better tractor reselling options
  • Access to original spare parts and lubricants
  • You’re guaranteed optimum power over the tractor’s operational costs
  • It is transferable if a new owner acquires a Deutz-Fahr tractor
  • You’re eligible to access extra technical and professional support

What Do the Reviews Say?

We checked reviews on TractorByNet.Com and FarmingForum.Com, and Deutz-Fahr tractors are highly rated.

Deutz-Fahr is a good brand.

Most reviews point to the tractors’ ease of use, durability, good interior, and compact design for the bigger tractors. Those are excellent features that differentiate the brand from competitors in the same price category.

So Should You Buy One?

Buy one if you have an excellent Deutz-Fahr dealership network in your area.

Like most German brands, Deutz-Fahr tractors are subjected to highly intensive tests before mass production. The trials and the company’s high-quality materials result in the tractors being very expensive.

Some negative reviews on the brand stem from their limited distribution network, complicated electronics, and higher initial purchase price.

My Take on Deutz-Fahr Tractors

Deutz tractors are very well appreciated in Central and Southern Europe due to their vast dealer support network.

The tractors are durable, sophisticated, have high torques, and their fuel efficiency is second to none.

If you’re in Europe, then you can opt for Deutz-Fahr tractors. However, a string of bad dealerships on the part of the company and its contracted dealerships has slightly tainted its reputable image.

Ensure to do your research first to determine how effective your local Deutz-Fahr distributor is, or its branches are before going with the brand.

It is an excellent brand that rivals the likes of Fendt, Kubota, John Deere, and Claas in terms of reliability.

You can never go wrong with a Deutz-Fahr.
